Toronto - TIFF Bell Lightbox
Saturday 24 May
The grisly details of the horrific murder of Matthew Shepard are well known, but close friend Michele Josue's intensely personal film provides intimate insights into the real person behind the heartbreaking headlines.
Fifteen years after the barbaric hate crime that took her friend, Josue interviews the important people in Shepard's life—parents Dennis and Judy, many friends and former teachers. Together they work through their persistent feelings of pain and anger. The interviews are complemented by poignant home movies, photos, letters and journal entries by Shepard, allowing him to posthumously represent his life in his own words.
Josue builds a beautiful portrait of Shepard's life, but also shows how those who loved him have turned the agony and loss caused by his senseless murder into solid political action. This film is at times devastating and enraging, and always compelling. Bring tissues!
